The Heart Behind the Harvest
Our farm is a labor of love. Located in Hinckley, the farm was officially purchased in 2014 from our late grandfather, Duane Root, to keep it in the family — making us the fifth generation to farm this land. We had already been farming it prior to his passing, and we wanted him to take comfort in knowing that we would continue to expand it in the future, and work to restore its historical value, and ecological practices.
Family Roots Farm is nationally classified as an "Organic Plus" farm. We use Vedic, and Biodynamic farming methods, and skillfully apply permaculture design, and agroforestry to create an optimal landscape for a farming operation that is completely sustainable, nurturing, and all-natural. We are also farm educators, and will always make ourselves available to assist a peer farmer.
In addition to our beloved garlic, we grow a boutique selection of heirloom produce for our non-GMO, organic products. Our jellies, pies, kosher dill pickles, pickled green beans, garlic, scapes, garlic butter, hot cauliflower, salsa, and our newest recipe — bread-and-butter pickles — are to die for! Our large Italian bee hives produce some of the most flavorful, and floral buckwheat honey in the fall. Grade A Medium, and Dark Robust maple syrup is also produced in late winter.

Our Garlic
The garlic we have planted includes the Hardneck varieties: Romanian Red, Music, Shvelisi/Turkish, German White, Roots Buckeye Red, Georgian Crystal, and Georgian Fire, and the Softneck varieties: Nootka Rose, Inchelium Red, Lorz Italian, S&H, and Silver White. We will also sell the ramps, and garlic scapes that we cut off of the Hardneck varieties in early summer. These are available by special order due to their short harvesting window.
Silverskin garlic braids will be available upon request in August. All garlic varieties ship in early fall. All garlic is CERTIFIED ORGANIC SEED QUALITY, and is sought after for its flavor-enhancing qualities, appealing to the most discerning palate. We are on track to harvest over two tons of organic garlic again this year!
We have a trademarked hybrid Hardneck rocambole garlic (known for its complex flavor) that is a wild crop, once thought to grow only in one area of the Pacific Northwest for an estimated century or more. We have discovered that it also grows wild in Northeast Ohio. We’ve chosen to name it “Roots Buckeye Red,” after our farm. It’s one of the most robust, and earthy garlics we’ve ever tasted — truly one of a kind. This is our top-selling garlic! We currently sell this seed in ½-pound increments only, and it sells out fast!

You will also find our farm stand at every Saturday at The Farmer's Market of Medina County on Granger Road. It is 2 miles from our farm from 9am-12pm. We will be opening up the farm on weekends in August and September for garlic and products of garlic. We will continue to sell our very popular holiday garlic bouquets, culinary garlic, buckwheat honey and grade A maple syrup through the rest of the year.
